Callbreak Rules: How to Play Call Break and Scoring
Updated: · 👥 Online, up to 4 players🔗 Online with a friend🤖 Vs computer🌍 Random opponent
Callbreak (also called Call Break or Lakdi) is a four-player trick-taking game hugely popular in India and Nepal. There are no partnerships: everyone plays alone, spades are always trump, and before each round you call how many tricks you will win. Make your call and you score it; miss and you lose it. After five rounds the highest total wins.

Cards and dealing
Callbreak uses a 52-card deck and four players. Aces are high, twos low and spades are always trump. The whole deck is dealt, 13 cards each, and the dealer moves one seat every round.
In Zipi, if any player is dealt no spades at all, the cards are automatically redealt so everyone starts with at least one trump.
Making your call
After the deal, starting left of the dealer, each player makes one call: the minimum number of tricks they will win that round. Calls range from 1 to 13; zero is not allowed and there is no second round of bidding. Each call binds only the player who made it.
Zipi's call screen suggests a number based on your hand's strength, which is a good starting point for beginners.
Playing the tricks
The player left of the dealer leads the first trick with any card, spades included. The others play one card each in turn. The trick goes to the highest spade, or if no spade was played, to the highest card of the suit led. The winner leads next.
Zipi variant: unlike Spades or Batak, Callbreak has no rule about breaking trumps, so you may lead a spade at any time. Some tables ban a spade lead on the first trick; Zipi allows it.
Compulsory rules
- Follow suit if you can.
- Beat the table: when following suit you must play a card higher than the best card of that suit on the table if you can. If the trick has already been trumped, any card of the suit led is fine.
- If you are void: you must play a spade that beats every spade on the table if you have one. If no spade has been played, any spade will do.
- If you cannot beat it: when you are void and cannot top the spades already played, you may play any card.
Unplayable cards are dimmed in Zipi, and tapping one tells you which rule stops it.
Callbreak scoring
| Result | Points |
|---|---|
| Call made (tricks equal to or above the call) | + the call |
| Each trick above the call | +0.1 |
| Call missed | − the call |
Examples: call 4 and take 4 for +4.0; call 4 and take 6 for +4.2; call 4 and take 3 for −4.0. Extra tricks are worth very little, so an accurate, ambitious call is always better than a timid one.
End of the match
A Callbreak match lasts 5 rounds. Each round's points are added up, and after the fifth round the player with the highest total wins. The score table shows each round's calls, tricks and points, and badges at the table track everyone's current call and tricks.
Common mistakes
- Calling low to stay safe: calling 2 and taking 5 scores only 2.3, while calling 4 would have scored 4.1.
- Overcalling: every missed call costs the full amount.
- Forgetting the must-beat rule: you cannot hold back a high card when it can beat the table.
- Spending spades too early: when trumps are scarce, each spade is a near-certain trick later.
Callbreak strategy tips for beginners
- Value your hand: aces and the king of spades are usually sure tricks; length in spades turns small spades into tricks as suits run out.
- Count short suits: a singleton or doubleton in a side suit gives you chances to trump.
- Watch the other calls: if the total of all calls is above 13, someone will fail; see who is struggling.
- Count spades: knowing how many of the 13 trumps are gone wins the final tricks.
- After making your call, defend: extra tricks are worth little, so focus on breaking opponents' calls.
- Setting a rival is points too: every negative score for them lifts you in the ranking.

Must I play a spade if I cannot follow suit?
Yes, if you have a spade that beats every spade already on the table. If you cannot beat them, you may play any card.

How many rounds are in a Callbreak match?
Five. The player with the highest total after the fifth round wins.
How is Callbreak different from Spades?
Callbreak has no partners, everyone must make their own call, beating the table and overtrumping are compulsory, extra tricks score 0.1 and there are no bag penalties.
